At St. Joseph’s Catholic School, parents are not just cars in a pickup line. They’re in the hallways, the classrooms, and the pews—familiar faces who roll up their sleeves and help our whole community thrive, learn, and connect with one another.
Parent participation is woven tightly into our school culture, which puts families at the forefront every day.
A Family-First Community in Practice
Parent volunteers plan and run some of the most beloved events on our calendar—the Fall Festival, Breakfast with Santa, Grandparents Day, and the Sweetheart Dance, just to name a few favorites. These aren’t small undertakings. They take creativity, coordination, and real hours of love. Every year, our families show up and make so many special memories for our students.
Each month, a different class’s parents stock the teacher workroom, making sure our teachers feel seen and celebrated not only during Teacher Appreciation Week, but throughout the entire year. Room parents also coordinate class parties throughout the year, turning ordinary school days into little celebrations.
Parents step into classrooms as surprise guest readers, giving children the gift of seeing the adults in their lives bring stories to life and prioritize literacy. As field trip chaperones, they help bring a sense of adventure to educational outings. They re-shelve books in our library, organize our uniform swap closet, helping families care for one another in practical ways. And we have them to thank for so many seasonal projects, like coordinating class Christmas T-shirts that become treasured keepsakes for years to come.
Perhaps most meaningfully of all, our families worship with us. On Thursday mornings, parents fill the pews alongside their children at school Mass.
Faith formation takes role models. When children watch the people they love and rely on show up, kneel down, and pray, they can better see and feel the power of worship in their families.
Why it Matters
2nd Grade father Paul Murray put it simply:
“Showing up is the smallest thing I can do—and the biggest difference I can make.”
Catholic education has always recognized that parents are the primary educators of their children. SJS supports and adheres to that mission.
When a child sees their mother walk through the classroom door to read a book, or spots their father in the pew at Mass, the family unit is strengthened. They are not away at school in a world separate from their family. Instead, they experience continuity and confidence: this place belongs to all of us.
That sense of belonging—of family woven into the daily life of a school—shapes children far beyond academics. It roots them in a culture where everyone, from the youngest kindergartener to the most seasoned teacher, feels held by a community that shows up for one another.
