What began as a dream rooted in the desire to meet every child’s academic needs has become one of St. Joseph’s most beloved and impactful programs—the Student Success Center. For 20 years, the SSC has been an answered prayer for students, families, and teachers alike.
Through the generous support of donors, the dedication of exceptional educators, and the grace of God, the Student Success Center has encouraged and equipped generations of Knights to succeed.
Supporting Students with Care and Purpose
The Student Success Center is a grant-funded program designed to support students primarily in the areas of reading and math, but its impact stretches far beyond those disciplines. Through one-on-one instruction, small group support, and in-class assistance, SSC tutors help students grow in confidence and skill by through individualized attention.
SSC teachers identify students who may benefit from academic support through classroom observation, teacher referrals, standardized test scores, and direct assistance during lessons. This allows them to understand each child’s specific needs and offer targeted instruction.
Meeting Each Child’s Needs
The SSC serves students by teaching test-taking strategies and study skills, managing appropriate testing accommodations, providing enrichment outside of classroom instruction time, and implementing multi-sensory phonics, reading, and math programs. These approaches give students alternative ways to learn and help accommodate different learning styles and learning differences.
But the SSC offers more than academic support. Tutors also help students with organization, time management, focus, and confidence. One graduating 5th grader recently shared a favorite memory of “carrying her entire desk to the SSC one time” so she could get help organizing her materials—a small but wonderful picture of the support that the SSC has instilled for two decades. The center is a place of practical help, patient encouragement, and confidence that every Knight is deeply known and supported.

Experienced Educators, Extraordinary Support
The tutors who serve in the Student Success Center are among the best and brightest retired teachers in Bibb County. With decades of classroom experience, they continue to complete training and professional development to stay informed on the latest research in learning styles, learning differences, and teaching methodologies. Their wisdom, compassion, and commitment are an extraordinary gift to our students.
One of the great strengths of the SSC is its ability to support students both individually and in the classroom. In addition to one-on-one tutoring, SSC teachers also use a “push-in” model, supporting students during active reading and math lessons in their own classrooms. This allows them to assist more students, help children apply skills in real time, and work closely with homeroom teachers so that classroom instruction and tutoring remain cohesive and in conversation with one another.
Confidence, Growth, and Joy
At St. Joseph’s, there is no stigma attached to receiving support. Students love spending time with their tutors and often ask to visit the SSC when they are having trouble with a lesson. They are proud of the progress they make and the skills they build. The SSC is not a place of discouragement, but a place of confidence, growth, and success.
Private tutors can be very costly, and many private schools charge significant fees for in-school academic support. Thanks to a generous grant, St. Joseph’s has been able to provide the highest caliber of support free of charge to students for two decades.
Giving Thanks for 20 Years
As we celebrate this milestone anniversary, we give thanks to God for the many prayers answered through the Student Success Center.
For 20 years, the SSC has helped students grow not only academically but in confidence, perseverance, and joy. We are grateful for the tutors, teachers, families, and supporters who have made this beautiful work possible.
Most of all, we are grateful for the students who remind us why this mission matters: every child deserves to be known, supported, and given what they need to succeed.
