Congratulations to St. Joseph’s 4th Grader Skylar Sevcik!
It is with great pride that we announce one of our own won 3rd Place in the PBS Kids Writers Contest. You can now hear Skylar read her winning story, “Baby Quilt,” on the Georgia Public Broadcasting website. The video features Skylar’s voice recorded over the story’s vibrant illustrations. Watch the video here.
“Baby Quilt” demonstrates a creative spirit and tender heart. Skylar tells the story of a grandmother and two granddaughters who want to make a baby quilt, but cannot find any fabric they like. The characters end up using their own clothes to make the quilt, which is filled with all their “beautiful memories.”

Skylar was invited to join the other winners in Atlanta to record the GPS piece. She also attended an awards ceremony, which she says was “a blast”!
We are blessed to have faculty who foster a love of writing across all grades at St. Joseph’s. Skylar is not the second or third, but the twelfth SJS student to be published in the past two years. While Skylar found this contest on her own, our teachers are always on the lookout for writing contests and opportunities for students to participate in. When young students see that their voices matter, that their ideas can reach beyond the classroom, their confidence soars.
Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart.
– Colossians 3:23
This win can serve as inspiration for all students at St. Joseph’s: What story do I have to tell? How can I share it with others?
May Skylar’s imagination and courage to share ripple out to our entire community, inspiring us to achieve new heights. We ask God to bless each of our students as they discover their own gifts and use them for excellence.
